Top 5 Things NOT to Miss at The Other Art Fair: March 2022

The Other Art Fair is starting celebrations for its 10th year anniversary in style, back at the Old Truman Brewery.

Showcasing 150 artists, selected for game-changing works and visions, in the heart of Shoreditch. The Other Art Fair continues its mission to re-frame art, and how it is experienced; offering an inclusive and exciting alternative on how to view art. With 62% exhibitors being female and International Women’s Day just gone, this edition  is focussed on championing women in art, as well as alternative practices sometimes excluded from the art (such as textiles and floristry). The diverse programme includes everything from special exhibitions, DJ Sets, installations, workshops and an art vending machine – here is a selection of our top five unmissable features.

1. Immersive Installation by The Line Girl

The Line Girl is a queer multidisciplinary artist who uses collage, drawing, installation and performance to explore the infinite subject of ‘Lines’. No boundaries remain with The Line Girl’s work, who ditches a traditional canvas in favour of working on walls, floors and objects. Prepare to experience her installation when you explore the fair.

2. Black Girl Knit Club Workshop

Sicgmone Kludje and Vea Koranteng began Black Girl Knit Club (BGKC) in East London as a safe space for black women and women of colour to create and learn. In their workshop, they will cover the fundamental stitches, (using up-cycled yarn from Liberty) and show how to master certain techniques including casting on, knit, pearl and moss stitch. These tools can be used to help with different materials and in up-cyling projects. This duo are here to promote empowerment and encourage diversity within the craft sphere, and we are restorative benefits of craft, this relaxing workshop is a great way to find community while learning a new skill and supporting a wonderful initiative.

3. Lizzy Vartanian Tatreez Workshop

Learn something new about Arabian Culture and gain a skill at Lizzy Vartanian’s incredible embroidery workshop. She’ll teach you to stitch a tree of life and discuss the history of needlework and different motifs throughout the Arab world over tea and snacks. Having hosted workshops everywhere from Amman, Jordan to the V&A fourth generation embroiderer Lizzy Vartanian shares a craft that was passed down to her through generations as is traditional in the Middle East. Her work is inspired by heritage in Armenia, Lebanon and Syria, and she mixes traditional influences with her own unique style.

4. Specially Curated Exhibition ‘Let’s Talk About Textiles’

Our superstar exhibitors and knitting extraordinaire’s Sofia Niazi and tapestry makers MH Sarkis and Llinos Owen, Let’s Talk About Textiles shines a light on incredible emerging, female textile artists.
