‘This is Debbie Mackinnon and welcome to a breezy spot on the coast. Excited and thank you TOAF for letting me takeover today. Anyone for a swim? Almost everything I do begins with looking at the ocean.’
‘On the rocks already! Here is my partner-in-crime (and art) Fiona Verity hard at work drawing on a shared work. We have evolved a great collaborative art practice together, although we also work separately. Coffee gets us started. Imperative.’
‘First we make monoprints in the studio, then working outside, draw in ink on the dry, folded sheets. It’s an exciting random process as we pass the papers to and fro, always folding over so the other doesn’t know what came before…’
‘Great memories of showing these collaborative sketchbook pages at TOAF Sydney. Visitors intrigued by the process. Framed or unframed?’
‘My own studio can get a little messy at times! Nothing better than squeezing out a lot of oil paint! This piece is called Keep On Running.’
‘Ying and yang. Warm and cool. I like to balance things out. So my coastal works almost always start with hot pink underpainting. The earth is heating up and we don’t know what will happen with climate change… just a little reminder that everyone should make efforts to protect our wonderful coast.’
‘A smaller splash! The smell of the salty spray is in my mind as I’m painting. I apply thick buttery oil paint with a palette knife to create the textures.’
‘Another frenetic creative day in the studio. Yes this truly is my benchtop. Now for the clean up! Any offers of help?’
‘Sneak peek, new works about to head off to the framer. Thanks for having me here at TOAF, it’s been fun to share my day. Hope there is some art under your tree. Merry Christmas to you all!’
