Fair Director’s Pick for the Week of January 6
Mahsa Merci
Mahsa Merci is an Iranian artist, based in Winnipeg, whose relocation to Canada allows her to explore ideas of gender, identity, and beauty in her work, free from restriction. Her latest painting series presents thoughtfully individuated portraits of the LGBTQ community—each one an articulation of specific lived experience, hinting at each subject’s personality, hobbies, relationships, values, trauma. Painting in a small scale, with a heavily textured—almost sculptural—application of paint, she aims to draw in the viewer, inviting them to recognize the manifest humanity of her subjects.

As Nicole forms her recommendations, she is considering key aspects of an artist’s work that demand special recognition—whether it be a fully articulated style that is unique and arresting, a mastery of technical skill that reveals an uncommon talent, or a strong underpinning of ideas that is fresh and provocative. It is our hope this this series will help you discover an artist whose works you really love.
