Ask A Curator

Reflections on ‘L.A. Woman’ from a Curator

Following the excitement of last week’s opening reception for L.A. Woman, we were pleased to host nearly 500 people at our space in Santa Monica. Many thanks to those in attendance at our opening.

It was a thrill to co-curate this exhibition with Katherine Henning, Saatchi Art’s Senior Associate Curator, and artist Vanessa Prager, who served as Guest Curator. While it was difficult to choose from the plethora of women artists in the Los Angeles area, we were overwhelmed by the caliber of the chosen works.

The art spoke for itself, as the gallery was packed throughout the evening. The excitement was palpable, as art enthusiasts, young and old, seasoned collectors, press and artists gathered to experience L.A. Woman. One of our aims at Saatchi Art is to provide exposure for our emerging artists. L.A. Woman brought together the diverse experiences of early and mid-career artists under the common theme of the city that inspires their work.

We give special thanks to Vanessa, whose introduction to the works of Kim West, (recently hailed as “L.A.’s Most Instagrammable Street Artist“), Mercedes Helnwein, Mel Kadel, and Lisa Solberg was invaluable. We are thrilled to continue our relationships with these artists and showcase their works to the wider Saatchi Art audience. For more about these artists, read Vanessa’s “Ask a Curator” post.

Some of the artworks featured in the exhibition are still available, so please don’t hesitate to contact a curator if you are interested in viewing the works in person.

The L.A. Woman collection can be viewed online, and in-person in Santa Monica through January 31, 2018. We are located at 1655 26th Street, Santa Monica, CA, and gallery hours are by appointment only Monday through Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday. Please email us to schedule a visit during gallery hours.

We look forward to seeing you in February at our next opening!
