Inside the Studio

Rose Masterpol

What are the major themes you pursue in your work?

I really don’t have themes per say, as my work is abstract. I do pursue themes of emotion, power, strength, soulfulness, and energy.

What was the best advice given to you as an artist?

Be true to yourself. Don’t try to be anything other than who you are. Find your voice. Don’t ever give up.

Prefer to work with music or in silence?

I always work with music on. It moves me and inspires me. It opens me up to be present to the canvas and the decisions I am about to make. It is a driving force and stirs up my passion.

If you could only have one piece of art in your life, what would it be?

It would be a very large painting by William de Kooning. His work has had a profound effect on me from a very young age.

Who are your favorite writers?

Stephen King, Virginia Woolf, Maya Angelou, and J.K. Rowling.
