Inside the Studio
Matteo Cassina
What are the major themes you pursue in your work?
I am focused on abstract art. At the beginning of a work, I have no idea what the final painting will be. I work in multiple layers. When I like the composition or I find something figurative in the paint, then I complete the work with a few more layers. I have learned that, in a painting, there are no mistakes. What we call mistakes are actually captivations, and when I find one, it’s a treasure for the continuation of the painting.
What was the best advice given to you as an artist?
Sadly no one gave me advice about my artworks. However, I am aware that gratification, mainly at the beginning of my journey as an artist, speaks stronger than many pieces of advice.
Prefer to work with music or in silence?
In silence, or with the TV on in the background.
If you could only have one piece of art in your life, what would it be?
Only one piece? Nah, better none than dreaming of several!
Who are your favorite writers?
Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Umberto Eco, Donato Carrisi, Andrea Camilleri, and Scarlett Thomas.
