The Others

Meet The Others: Bella Vernon

The Game Changers. The Rule Breakers. The Innovators. Discover some of the fantastic emerging talent showcasing their work at The Other Art Fair.

Bella Vernon explores the potential of reclaimed objects, embedding them with imagery inspired by the landscapes around her. Salvaged mirrors, windows, and glass are restored from forgotten fragments into autonomous sculptural pieces that, in their partial transparency, traverse the boundaries between drawing and architecture.

How would you describe your artwork?

I would describe my work as an inverted form of sculpture. Through the appropriation of found materials, such as heavily foxed mirrors and dilapidated windows, I transform these objects into an alternative canvas.
Using a self-cultivated process of addition and subtraction, I infuse imagery into the surface of the glass with candle smoke and pigment. I see these autonomous pieces as portals into other visual worlds.

What does making art mean to you?

It’s a space to respond to and explore my perceptions of the world. A place to play, be creative, to ignite and connect with a sense of innocence.

How did you get started making art?

It’s in the blood – you can’t escape that.

What is it like to be a part of The Other Art Fair?

It’s a really good experience being part of The Other Art Fair, it helps one cultivate professionalism and it’s a great way to connect with other artists, appreciators, and collectors.

What is your favourite piece for sale on your Saatchi Art profile and why?

Canopy of Light – Every mirror has its own set of material qualities, depending on how and when it was made and all the conditions it has been exposed to throughout its life. So often these elements determine the nature of the finished piece; however, this mirror was receptive to a delicate and intricate drawing, which I truly love. The tree sits in the openness of the mirror as it encapsulate its surroundings, reflecting light and space.
