TOAF takeover

#TOAFtakeover: Chris Humphries

Welcome to #TOAFtakeover, an Instagram series that gives you an insight into the work and life of our artists.

Hi my name is Chris Humphries. This is me in my studio. My studio is at the old Glenroy Primary School. My studio is in what used to be the First Aid room. The studio is run by JStudios and Moreland City Council.

What I am currently working on is a piece that will be nine A4 Perspex panels side by side. The work will eventually be 1.9m long. I create these drawings with permanent marker. The imagery is local landscape. I like promoting the amazing natural environments in and around Melbourne, through my artwork.

This is a public artwork I created for Moreland City Council, in 2016. It is called ‘Translucent Landscapes’. It is thirty six drawings on Perspex with permanent marker. This installation was exhibited in the grounds of a church. The images I drew were inspired by the landscape along the Merri Creek an important tributary in the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne.

This is a drawing I made in a book, using pen and ink. I have drawn onto the page opposite the title page. The artwork is called, ‘Drawing in Bark House Days’ and was exhibited at The Other Art Fair Sydney 2016. This work was also selected in the Wyndham Art Prize, 2016. This artwork is framed by Omnus Framing in Melbourne. This work is available for purchase.

I was commissioned last year to create a drawing for the new Wynnton Ridge wine label. A small boutique vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Projects such as these are satisfying as it is a chance to collaborate. The wine is very good also.

I exhibited this work at The Other Art Fair Sydney 2016. I am hoping to be doing the same this year in Melbourne. I have drawn this with ink on paper, using a brush. The artwork is called ‘Great Bay, Bruny Island’. I made this artwork after a trip to Tasmania last year, I find the landscape in this part of Australia very inspiring. This work is available to purchase.

Finally working on a monoprint self portrait. This actual monoprint was a mistake. I enjoy turning mistakes into an artwork that I can be pleased with. Mistakes can turn out to be the best artworks. Thank you to The Other Art Fair.
