Jaeyeol Han
As part of his National Service South Korean artist Jaeyeol Han was sent to Haiti to assist in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. Amidst the devastation he was struck by the dignity of everyone he encountered, and the huge impact this made on him led to a series of abstract portraits. “It is the job of the artist”, he says, “to pay close attention to things, to give them the attention they deserve. This series of paintings shows a distinction about the power of existence when complete strangers become objects of interest to me.”
Han’s grasp of portraiture’s complex surfaces and his confident engagement with both his material and subject matter sees him deliver portraits for the fast paced, splintered reality of contemporary life.
Han’s second solo show opens at Gahoedong60 Gallery in Seoul on June 12th, 2013.
