Welcome to #TOAFtakeover, an Instagram series that gives you an insight into the work and life of our artists.

Hi I’m Jordy Hewitt and I’ll be your TOAF Takeover host today. This is my studio in Fremantle at the Many 6160 project. Image by my good friend and amazing artist Liz Looker.

My visual art practice started at life drawing classes and many of my early works feature heads, faces and bodies. I’ve always worked in a way that is involved, direct and quick because I want to connect with something emotional (tapping a vein, rather than focusing on what the image is becoming). Monoprinting appeals to me because it is very painterly and allows for really atmospheric and affecting mark making like smudges, scratches and finger-prints.

In these works I started to dismantle the figures I was used to drawing from observation and create more of a disorienting soup. The focus moved away from the person as a motif (a tangible subject) to a sensory and existential transcription.

The title of this series refers to my grandmother’s last words – she believed in reincarnation but was not particularly thrilled with the prospect of having to return. There is a mix of apprehension, expectation and fear involved in leaping and shifting and maybe this work acknowledges and encourages that.
