The Others

Meet The Others: Janice Gobey

The Game Changers. The Rule Breakers. The Innovators. Discover some of the fantastic emerging talent showcasing their work at The Other Art Fair.

In her words, Janice Gobey interprets the world around her as becoming increasingly disconnected and alienating. Janice gives the viewer the opportunity to reconnect and to sense the emotions of the human and animal subjects in her paintings. Janice’s detailed, textured works allow her audience to feel the tactile qualities of fur and drapery.

How would you describe your artwork?

Furry!  I think it takes the viewer on a tactile journey.  I enjoy creating another world with paint.

What does making art mean to you?

It means everything to me – I am not sure I could survive without making it.  It is the way I express what’s going on inside my head.

How did you get started making art?

It has been something I have always done – as an introverted child, art was my way of making meaning, and something that grabbed my attention. I am a person that needs to make art, not only wants to. As soon as I have time out of the studio, I long to be back there.

What is it like to be a part of The Other Art Fair?

Fun, an interesting experience – lots of different people to meet and get their views on your work.

What is your favourite piece for sale on your Saatchi Art profile and why?

Ephemeral. A Berlin based artist friend of mine, Boris Eldagsen, posed for this; he has very distinctive hands. The painting was painted quickly and I left it loose and brushy as it seemed to fit the subject matter.

Janice Gobey, ‘Ephemeral’, Oil and Linen on Other, 12 H x 16 W, $976
