Jaime Derringer is the founder and editor of the modern design blog Design Milk, which has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Time Out New York, San Francisco Chronicle, Singapore Home & Decor magazine, and Real Simple magazine. Design Milk has been named one of the Google Engineers’ Staff Picks and has been included in Twitter’s “Who to Follow” list of influencers in Art & Design. Inspired by her love for dogs, in 2010 Jaime launched modern design blog Dog Milk to expose dog lovers to pet design that fits their uniquely modern sense of style. What was the first piece of art you bought?
My first original piece of art was a commission—I invited artist Tyson Anthony Roberts to recreate a photograph I had taken at Torrey Pines State Reserve. It was commissioned to commemorate a time when we lived in San Diego, but luckily we were actually able to move back to the area, so now it feels like it belongs here.
How would you describe your taste in art? What are you drawn to?
Modern, contemporary, graphic, abstract with a little bit of weird.
What role does art play in your life?
Art is a huge part of my life. Not only do I love collecting art, but I also make art myself. I currently have a project called A Shape A Day 2013, where I draw a shape each day, so not a day goes by where that I’m not somehow exposed to or making art.
Jaime, who is a runner, says, “You will most likely catch me in some sort of casual colorful sneaker. I don’t dress up too often, so I feel like these are a staple of my uniform. What do you collect?
Oddly enough, I collect milk cartons…metal, ceramic, glass…I have them all. It’s because of my blog’s logo that it started. It kind of began as a joke, but now it’s turned into a real collection. On the art front, I don’t collect anything in particular, but I’m always on the lookout for emerging artists. I like to support the community.
How would you describe your personal style?
Modern all the way, with a mix of desert, contemporary and a dash of bizarro. My dream is to live in the house from Beetlejuice after the renovation.
If you could only have one piece of art in your life, which would it be and why?
Something my daughter drew. She’s only 20 months old, but she loves making art! It’s something we do together.

Which artist would you most like to meet?
Marina Abramović. I am so disappointed I did not get to sit with her at MoMA.
What books are on your bedside table?
None! I have not had any time to read lately. I typically go through phases where I will be very excited to read, and then dry spells. Sometimes I’ll have magazines like Dwell on my nightstand. Sometimes I like having nothing. It makes me feel like I don’t have anything to do; nothing left unfinished.
What was the last great exhibition you attended?
I don’t get to go to many exhibitions because there aren’t too many around me. One of my most memorable ones from recent years was the Dali exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was incredible. I live vicariously through a lot of my NYC based friends and am grateful I don’t have to stand in line for 5 hours to not get rained on [Rain Room at MoMA PS1].

Do you have a favorite museum or gallery?
No, I can’t choose favorites– but I always enjoy outdoor installations or exhibitions. Something about installing your work in a non-museum or non-gallery setting is pretty awesome. For example, the recent Ugo Rondinone installation in NYC.
If you could paint, draw, sculpt, photograph, etc., which skill would you most like to possess?
I do some of these things! I have always wanted to be able to draw realistically– portraits, faces, hands, etc. But I just don’t possess the talent. I’ve also always wanted to be good at graphic design, but I’m terrible at it! There is an eye that you need to have to do it well, and I was born with a different eye I suppose…
