For Steffen Vogelezang, a flower or plant, pelican or cream cake can inspire a painting. Through his work he explores the relationship between the discrete world of a painting and the real world around him. Steffen studied at the Gerrit Rietvevld Academie, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where he lives and works. He currently teaches at Viser T Hooft Lyceum in Leiden, and has exhibited his work throughout the Netherlands in solo and group exhibitions.

Investing in Art

In the 1960s, Herbert and Dorothy Vogel, who lived in a one-bedroom apartment in New York, started buying art. They acquired works by emerging artists, not well known but making exciting work, and built up a collection of over 4,000 works, including Roy Lichtenstein, Donald Judd and Chuck Close. In 1992, they donated it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Buying work by emerging artists, often before they get taken on by galleries, is a great way to start a collection. For each edition of our Invest in Art series our Chief Curator Rebecca Wilson introduces outstanding emerging artists from around the world so that you can be among the first to discover a new art star and acquire works with the potential to rise in value.

One Final Note: There are no guarantees when it comes to buying art and you should always feel happy with what you’re buying as it may be on your walls for a pleasurably long time. But if you are interested in the investment side of buying art then acquiring works by emerging artists is a great way to begin. We hope you enjoy our selection.
