One to Watch

Kal Mansur

Kal Mansur is an emerging artist currently living and working in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He earned his BFA from the University of Texas. Kal’s minimalist acrylic and plexiglass constructions are explorations of color, shape, form, and movement. Inspired by architecture and geometric forms, these sculptures juxtapose sharp angles and precise lines with a blend of translucent, luminous colors that shift and vary depending on the available light.

Kal has received numerous awards for his works, including Best of Show at Box Heart Gallery’s Art Inter/National Exhibition in 2015 and the Visual Artists Grant from the Ontario Art Council in 2011 and 2013. He has participated in extensive solo and group shows around the world in countries including Canada, USA, United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Kal has a number of international exhibitions slated for the upcoming year, including an exhibition of recent works at George Billis Gallery in Los Angeles, a solo show at Boxheart Gallery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and several affordable art fairs in Europe.

What are the major themes you pursue in your work?

I explore the idea of transition in color, shape, form and movement. It is important that my work vibrates between these four concepts. I have developed a system that enables the viewer to perceive different colors from different angles.

What was the best advice given to you as an artist?

Repetition leads to consistency, which leads to true creativity.

Prefer to work with music or in silence?

Some music in the evening hours. Mostly NPR.

If you could only have one piece of art in your life, what would it be?

A Donald Judd box.

Who are your favorite writers?

I don’t read enough to have a favorite. Most of my reading occupies the search for information about my materials or the tools and machines I use in my practice.
