Masters of Manipulation: 6 Photographers You Should Know

Photographic manipulation is increasingly being practiced by artists to create stunning illusions that reflect their dreams and altered realities. Essentially, it is the art of illusion which requires a great amount of skill and imagination. Using tools like digital photography, Photoshop, and other advanced editing tools, these six Saatchi Art artists are masters in manipulation.

Flora Borsi

Hungarian artist Flora Borsi uses unique photo manipulation techniques to create surreal images that are thematically focused on identity, relationships, emotions, and dreams. Playing with themes of identity and the relationship between body and self, her compositions often question the representation of the female form. Flora has exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA, including at the Louvre in Paris. In addition to winning numerous art prizes, she has garnered critical acclaim from press including The Guardian’s Observer and BBC Culture and had her work featured as the face of Adobe’s Corporate Identity in 2018. 

Paul Brouns

Known for his ‘Urban Tapestries’, Dutch artist Paul Brouns stitches together colorful, architectural elements that result in rhythmic and eye-catching compositions. He believes that apart from its functional qualities, architecture also has a graphical and abstract dimension. Through his work, the artist explores the limits of digital photography and digital manipulation which has been his desired medium in recent years. Brouns’ works are collected worldwide and most recently he won 1st Place at the International Color Awards and presented his works at The Other Art Fair 2019, London.

Kasia Derwinska

Kasia Derwinska is a self-taught photographer and digital artist based in Spain. Her symbolic works convey fairytales, childhood dreams, and fantasies, which often address her own experiences, thoughts, doubts, and fears. Like a brush for painting, she uses photography as her tool to navigate these ideas. Kasia has participated in numerous photography festivals and has won 1st place at the Tokyo International Foto Awards, 1st place at the International Photography Awards in New York, and 3rd place at the Moscow International Foto Awards 2016 for the ‘Special Effects’ category.

Tommy Ingberg

Swedish photographer Tommy Ingberg works exclusively with photography and digital editing tools, creating self-reflecting surreal photo montages that deal with human nature. Tommy leaves the interpretation of his work up to the viewer but says, “For me, surrealism is about trying to explain something abstract like a feeling or a thought, expressing the subconscious with a picture. Ingberg has received international recognition having had his work published and achieved many honorable mentions from competitions including the International Photography Awards, Prix De La Photographie, Paris, and the Sony World Photography Awards.

Svetlana Melik-Nubarova

Svetlana Melik-Nubarova is a fine art photographer from Kazakhstan. She uses the old portrait painting style to create images that are thematically focused on identity, relationships, emotions, and dreams. Her technique creates beautiful evocations of universal emotions of beauty, femininity, and fragility. She visualizes atmospheric dreams, utilizing clever metaphors while unlocking what it means to think, feel, dream and express in the modern world. Svetlana has exhibited internationally with collective exhibitions across Europe and the United States.  She has won multiple art prizes including the 2017 Tokyo International Foto Awards (Bronze) and the 2018 Paris Photo Prize (Gold).
